I get macros now but like can we custimize the shell and leds of the controller?

I don't get it, the old controllers you could custimize. Now you can't? I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation but I'm hoping to get one soon and I love some cool designs. You know with the cool led lights around the "soul." What does the macro chip do? Please Explain! :D ty
