Apparently it's next-gen only, which is really awful news.

I don't mind purchasing the new console - though I was hoping to do so a year or so after release - but I hope someone more importantly, finds a way of using Xbox 360 controllers on the 720. I want to use the macro!

Yes, but a lot of people have also recently bought a macro controller; spending $200 on a controller which can only be used for a few months, is a bit much in my view. Thus, if the next CoD came out on the current-gen (or if a workaround is found which allows current-gen controllers to used on next-gen machines), it would give the controller another year of solid use, if not more.

I think you are assuming that literally every gamer is going to run out and buy the next gen XBOX console the very same day it hits store shelves. That never happens.
