As was rumored earlier this month, the new Xbox 360 system update has begun rolling out today. Unlike previous updates, not everyone will get the update at once; it'll instead be rolled out over the "next couple weeks to ensure a high quality deployment."

The update adds PayPal as a billing option for users in the United States and internationally (with some exceptions, including Japan, Brazil, and India). It can be used to purchase Microsoft Points, Xbox Live subscriptions, and titles from the Games on Demand service. Support for the new Xbox 360 disc format that had been beta tested over the last month-plus is also included as a part of the update.

The one big, unannounced feature the update adds is auto-standby. When your console is left idle for more than an hour, the console will put itself into a standby mode that consumes less power. This is an option you can disable, should you feel the need, but it will be enabled by default once your system has been updated.

Microsoft had initially suggested this update could result in some Xbox 360 systems becoming unable to read discs, but that is actually not the case. Microsoft clarified that this possibility was related to a previous update; this new update is not believed to have any compatibility issues, so you should be able to update without fear of it bricking your system.

Let me translate (this is a loose translation):

"Microsoft saw that PSN got pwned. Microsoft did a thorough security audit and found out that they have giant leaking holes, and it was a miracle they didn't get pwned, too. Microsoft is rolling out a megahugesuper security update to close the holes. The update is so big that they don't want to roll it all out at once because they might take down their network. Microsoft is probably moving waves of customers over to new sever farms. PSN got pwned because it was an inside job where the janitor walked into the building and walked out with a laptop full of candy. Turns out MS was renting the same cheap-ass servers in the Caribbean/South America as PSN.

Furthermore, we have found that Viking360 customers are using their macro controllers to farm for XP. In a sad attempt to stop these, we are adding an auto console power-off feature that hopefully should screw up those point farmers"

Actually this may be quite true, make sure to disable this if you are xp farming!

Remember to disable that feature as it apparently comes auto-on.
