Razer Reveals Razer Onza 360 Controllers @ CES

CES means one thing to us here at G4: New and exciting controllers, and Razer's just-revealed 360 controllers are as new and exciting as it gets. They're putting out two controllers: The Razer Onza 360 Tournament editions controller pictured above, and a Standard edition.

Onza Tournament Edition offers adjustable resistance analog sticks, and the ability to twist the analog sticks in one direction to make them more resistant for steadier control, or twist in the opposite direction for quicker, fluid movements.

The Razer Onza Standard Edition features Multi-Function Buttons (MFB) on the controller’s shoulders which allow remapping of critical buttons to any location under your fingertips. This is meant to increase efficiency of game control, but also aids those with disabilities unable to reach specific functions on standard controllers.

Both Standard and Tournament Editions feature "MFB, Hyperesponse technology," PC compatibility, and a 15 foot cable. You'll be able to pre-order either controller on January 17. The Tourney edition will set you back $49.99, while the Standard controller is $39.99.

Personally, I still prefer the controller that came with my Xbox. I have a couple others, but that one is so broken-in, scratched up and delightfully lived-in that I never play with anything else. I do wonder if a more "pro" controller would improve my gaming.

being able to put the knife button on the shoulder would be awesome. Thing I hate about the viking is that I can't easily hit any of the tact switches

aye jets no one was comparing this to the Viking and how can you compare something you've never used?

Anyways I've been wanting to get this since I saw videos on youtube over the Summer, going to pre-order soon to test this baby out.

I'm digging the fact that it is guaranteed not to have slow-turn unlike the xbox 360 controllers, adjustable analog sticks, and that it's compatible with pc. The backlighting, hyperesponse buttons, and rubberized surface texture are a plus too.

I'm comparing it lol, I prefer the ability to do maros.

I love the backlighting + hyperresponse buttons + rubberized surface textures...adjustable sticks, etc. If it had macros it would own. But the fact of the matter is it doesn't so it is useless to me. I can't live without my turbo knife, rapid-fire, dropshot-mod, etc.

This was well documented - the fix for slow turn is a little bit of sandpaper to widen the hole around your thumbstick - you can solve this for about 10 cents. There's an app on the XBOX live store that will show your analog sticks up on the screen to tell you if you've hit the extreme yet or not (if you can't necessarily tell by feel / gameplay after you've sandpapered). Also some people are claiming that slow turn is no longer an issue on the 'new' style black and silver shells that came out in Fall 2010.

Their controller looks pimpin' to me. I'm glad they were finally able to solve their licensing issues with Microsoft and get their product to market.

SOME More info

The adjustable tension analog sticks are by far the most talked-about feature of the Onza Tournament Edition. We've all had more than our fair share of frustrating gaming moments where we push the analog stick too far or too little, trying to get the cursor to move into an exact spot. The Onza's adjustable tension makes fine movements easier. More tension means you can apply more force and move the stick considerably less. The end result gives you more control, and having more control is always good.

Turning the gear under the thumbstick clockwise adds tension, and a counterclockwise twist loosens it. The gear makes an audible click for each movement, so you can count precisely how many turns you want on both sides. It also makes it easy to get back to your settings if someone else uses the controller. We counted 28 distinct gear clicks, so there's plenty of variability if you want to tweak. Getting to your precise setting shouldn't take more than a minute if they've been changed.

Adding tension to the sticks forces some trade-offs. More tension means you'll likely be moving the sticks much more slowly, and it will take you longer to push the stick to the farthest range of movement. Adding tension also makes it difficult (almost impossible at the highest tension setting) to depress the analog stick buttons. Fortunately, you can remap them via the controls on the bottom of the Onza, which we cover later in this article.

Looks amazing and jammed-pack with features. If it had rapid-fire + turbo knife, I'd be sold. I just can't live without those! An amazing tournament controller though...
