you should be fine continuing to use the free trial...
mine doesnt run out although every time it opens it asks me to buy it...
all you need it for is so you can drag the mode to your desktop but YES it IS necessary

WinRAR is a free program. It was made because ZIP was charging people for its program way back when, so then WinRAR was released. It only ask you to buy it, you don't have to buy it to keep using it. The reason they ask you to buy it is because they would like people to buy it so they can make some money for there work involved with it, but its not necessary to buy it.
