Honestly a java based program would allow web support and a universal support for cross platforms. You could run it like minecraft from the browser or desktop however internet connectivity would be a big deal if done wrong. Java isn't going anywhere soon. It's main competition is ruby and is way behind still. Java can be harsh on system requirements through.
