Software not recognizing that my controller is plugged in

My software is not recognizing that my controller is plugged in. My top left quadrent and bottom right quadrent are white. But the software still claims that my controller is disconnected. How do I fix this?

Note: I downloaded the software today and my computer recognizes my controller being plugged in.

Greetings;

*Try a friend's PC to verify it's a problem with the controller?
*Try fresh batteries
*Try an authentic Microsoft play and charge cable
*If you are connecting via a USB hub, connect direct to the computer instead
*Try the USB ports on front and back of your computer
*If you are on a MAC emulating windows, stop now, go get a real PC, and try again
*Install .net framework 4.0?
*Powering up by pressing the start button and not the guide button?
*If you are on Vista, run as fast as you can to a computer with XP, Win7, or Win8

Just throwing the usual suggestions your way to see if anything helps out.
