Upgrade from sleeper to a duo

So I bought a sleeper a few weeks ago in February and it is very good without any problems, except for the fact that it always re syncs when I hold the sync button for to long. I was kind of stretched for money then so i didn't get the duo with different LED's, controller color, 3.5 mm jack, and all that jazz. Now i have the time (and money) to install some tac switches and colored LEDs. I'm hoping it will turn out to be beastly, as long as I put everything in the right place. Do you all know what kind of LEDs and switches I should buy at Radio Shack? Will I need any de-soldering equipment?

Well, it isn't realy that quite, because quite isn't a descriptive word. I think you meant quiet. (This is a friendly joke, I just find smiley's retarded or I would put one here)

Ok you need 0603 SMD for your LED's like This....The easiest way to remove them without messing up the pads is to cover the whole LED with solder then wipe it away. The tact switches are 4mm high, you will need to look in the bins at radioshack for that, I don't have a link or part number. For the 3.5mm jack I usually use 274-0249 or 274-246(RadioShack Part Numbers). You need these drill bits,15/64" for the 3.5mm jack, 9/64" for the tact switches. Desoldering equipment will help but not necessary. You could get a roll of Solder Wick to make the desoldering easier. You are also going to have to switch some wires around on the chip as well, I will leave a link to install instructions. Okay that's the end of my long winded response :lol:

Wow, that's real mature. Whatever, it's not a big deal. It looked like it would have taken a long time to get that pattern to it, but when I quote you, I realised that it just apears that way.

Ok let's try to keep on topic.

Charley do you have access to the different installation instructions for the viking chip? Do you want to just add a tac switch instead of using the sync button, this is easy, but if you want to convert from sleeper to duo (aka from thor's hammer to odin's raven) a little more work will be involved, as the odin's raven does not connect ot the sync button. I think you end up moving four or five different connections, I think this results in one of the wires needing to be replaced as it's too short to reach. I think fredrow had a short writeup for this somewheres on the forums but I don't have time to search. I would just sit down with the install instructions, print them out and map out a game plan :)

Yes i have all the parts i need, tact. switches, plenty of 30 guage wire, solder, iron, etc. I belive I will desolder the sync button wire which is point F and add and solder an extension wire on to make it reach the right tact switch. then I will solder wire to point H which goes to the left tact. switch. This means I am completely upgrading the controller by adding 2 tact. switches.

The only thing I am really confused about is the second prong on the tact. switches that I have to wire to a 'ground'. Would that be point G on the microchip, or a point on the PCB of the controller?

Ill look for fredrow's write up. If anyone has detailed install instructions for the swittches tell me. Thanks.

kk thanks irish you've been a great help. Technically this is my first mod so i dont know all of the little holes or points on the circuit board. Hopefully i can do some other neat stuff now that i have the soldering iron. (and no more smiley spamming or quoting smiley spammers. It takes like a minute for my phone to get all the way to the bottom of the page. Lol.

Good deal, sounds like you got it sorted. This is just the begining of life for you and your soldering iron now lol. I know when I first learned I was trying to solder everything in my bedroom lol. Now you can mess around with led's when you get a steady and confident hand with it.

ok i did the install and everything seemed fine I put my controller back together and tried to upload a duo preset. i couldn't get the controller into boot loader mode and the switches don't seem to be working. Every button other than the tact switches works fine. I think I messed up with the grounds and let me tell you how I did them, I put all 3 wires( ground to Viking chip, and the two tact. grounds) all on the same point right below the Right trigger solder point. To me it doesn't make sense to have 3 wires on 1 point but I can change it if I need to. Here is a picture, unfortunately its pretty low quality.

EDit: okay nevermind all of that, I found out that the ground was working fine, the problem was that I didn't realize how far down I had to press on the Tact switches. Now it works and I will post some Pics of my new duo. :D

Wow im in love with my new duo and Ive only payed one game with it. no more re syncing :D which makes the quick on/off actually quick. Is there another way to upload pictures without using the attachments? for some reason it won't let me use the attachments :( for now all use photo-bucket but it is kinda annoying.
